Sikh Students' Association
Mission
The purpose of this organization is to provide a community for Sikh students at UMKC to do both Panthic and external Parchaar. Through monthly member meetings, SSA members are able to discuss Gurmat and Sikh Ithihaas-centered topics in depth to facilitate spiritual growth during their university years. Started in 2022 by the SSA sevadaars, Langar at the Union and Chardikala events provide the platform for Sikh Parchaar amongst students and professors. The aim of the UMKC SSA is to provide a Sikh Sangat for students and further promote the growth of the Panth.
Langar at the Union
Started by SSA Sevadaars in 2022, Langar at the Union is aimed to educate and promote awareness about the Sikh faith around campus. Sevadaars provide informational flyers along with pre-packed Langar (that has been provided by Midwest Sikh Gurudwara) to passing students. A practice started by Guru Nanak Dev ji, Langar is prepared in a Gurudwara and provided to everyone free of cost regardless of race, religion, status, gender, etc. It is an integral part of the Sikh faith. More information on Langar can be found here: https://www.sikhiwiki.org/index.php/Langar
Chardikala Event
In preparation for midterms/finals week, a Chardikala event is held at Midwest Sikh Gurudwara to promote a sense of Chardikala which embodies a sense of acceptance of Hukam (God's Will) and fearlessness. By coming together as Sangat, Aarti Aarta is sung, Ardaas is performed, and Guru Sahib's Hukamnama is given. Following Darbar, the Sangat gathers around a campfire to enjoy s'mores and hot chocolate while Sevadaars and students share Sakhis (stories) of the Guru's and prominent Gursikhs.
